Known for "the World's Safest Beaches," this coastal town south of Santa Barbara and Montecito provides all the surf/beach atmosphere one could ask for. Its name originated from being home to a carpentry shop for the Chumash canoe building; local tar seepage was used for sealing the canoes. Larger than its neighbor Summerland, Carpinteria is home to Rincon Beach, a famous surfing spot, an annual avocado festival, and the renowned Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Downtown Carpinteria offers restaurants, boutique and surf shops for all ages and tastes.
