The city of Goleta is located to the west of Santa Barbara and contains the Santa Barbara Airport along with the University of California at Santa Barbara. The city is known for its history of citrus orchards and celebrates a lemon festival every October. It is also home to the famous Black Monarch butterflies in the Wellwood Butterfly Preserve. With several elementary schools and slightly less expensive real estate, Goleta is family-friendly. Goleta's history was one of rural-agriculture, and has become a more suburban area with defense-related research and aerospace firms.
