Santa Barbara Proper, often called "The American Riviera," is a beautiful collage of several "specialty" neighborhoods, each with their own flavor and delights. The beach and harbor area is home to the world famous Stearn's Wharf. Downtown Santa Barbara offers theaters, shopping, restaurants, museums and parks, along with historic architecture, the ever popular Red-Tile Roof, and the renowned Courthouse. The Riviera neighborhood is steep and winding, offering spectacular views of the ocean, islands, and city. Mission Canyon is located in the valley, or canyon, near Mission Santa Barbara, a place of shade and peaceful privacy. The neighborhood of Samarkand (an archaic Persian word meaning "the land of heart's desire") is a highly desirable area with gently sloping hills and great mountain views, and is central to everything. San Roque is also a sought-after neighborhood of diverse architectural themes and is usually slightly warmer due to its proximity to the foothills. The Mesa, an area next to the beach, is home to Santa Barbara City College and has phenomenal views.
